Had fun watching the video diaries of Rachel Roy and her RRR team?
Well I have more Rachel Roy fun for you! I was able to get my hands on exclusive Q & A’s with Rachel Roy and each of the cool ladies you checked out in the videos. They talk about everything from their love of fashion and favorite RRR pieces to balancing work and home life! Because there was so much good stuff, I will only give you the highlights here, but don’t worry! You can get all of the full interviews right here!
What is your advice to other women looking to achieve your unique, stand out style?
Know yourself well. Have the confidence to wear what you want and wear it well. Experiment with unique colors and prints.
How do you balance life as a mom and a designer?
Balance needs to be worked on daily. Without a constant focus on what is truly important it will get lost every time.
What are your favorite RRR pieces for summer? What makes them your favorite?
I absolutely love the evil eye pendant. Evil eyes are loved for karma and the good energy they bring. The black scalloped shorts are a perfect combination of ease and sophistication. The Koala animal ring is fun, I always love a good cocktail ring. The printed flats with gold studs are comfortable, unique and so chic. I love the honeycomb scarf worn as a turban. And everyone always needs a cardi and my summer collection has so many different cardigans to choose from.
What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is motivation for me. I jump out of bed in the morning if I have something new to wear awaiting me. Fashion is constant evolution and a chance to re-create myself every day. It’s my armor, my entertainment, my obsession. If I’m not dressing myself or working on the collection, I’m dressing my daughter, my husband…I can’t help myself. I am completely absorbed!
How do you balance life as a working mother?
It’s really tough sometimes to balance work and family. I make breakfast for Violet every morning, help her get ready and walk her to school. And I am there to play a bit, read and put her to bed every night. I try to get home early enough to have dinner together as a family as much as I can. And then the weekends are Mommy and Violet time, mostly, and usually a little time with the three of us, too. Whatever I need to get done, Violet just tags along, my little companion–grocery shopping, dry cleaner, wherever. We always have fun. And I make sure to plan time that is just about her–the park, skateboarding, bikeriding (love putting her on the back of my bike and riding down the Hudson!), a show, and yes, shopping! She has a discerning eye and likes clothes and sneakers!
I also commit to working at home at night pretty regularly and not sleeping a whole lot. I don’t believe there is any shortcut to doing things really well, or at least I haven’t found it yet. I am very passionate about my work and of course, about Violet, so working hard is not so hard.
How would you describe your personal style?
Boho hippie meets grandmother librarian with a smidgen of tart mixed in. I am drawn to sparkle like a moth to a flame.
If you could choose a muse who would it be and why?
Kate Moss, now and forever, because she never gets it wrong, and Iris Apfel, because takes risks every day and so clearly enjoys fashion. At the end of the day, isn’t that the point?
What city inspires you the most and why?
I really enjoyed Istanbul when I went there…the sights, the sounds, the smells, the beauty of old traditional buildings mixed with run down shanty like areas and all the texture was amazing. On a more regular basis of getting inspired, I’d say Hong Kong and New York.
How do you get inspiration for your shoe sketches?
Living in New York City, in the heart of the fashion world, allows us to see new fresh ideas all the time. Keeping your eyes open, noticing people around you, thinking of new ways to push something that’s already “in”. We also travel the world and see what’s hot in places like Hong Kong, London, Milan…we check out new toe shapes, heel heights and silhouettes in Florence and we are educated by the sophistication in Paris.
Do you have a favorite shoe style?
I’m a bootie, boots and jellies girl…
