Friend Friday: Connecting with Our Readers

This is a great topic for this Friend Friday because I have to admit I have been in a slight blogging funk lately.  I know it’s partly due to the other writing project of mine that’s demanding most of my attention but I have to give both of my writing kids equal play time! Getting to talk about the reader-blogger relationship reminds me of how important my readers are to me!

And before we go on, I will take this time to say how much I appreciate every single reader that comes through here.  Whether you stop by one time or are a regular, it means the world to me that you take the time to listen to my craziness! LOL

How important do you think reader connectedness is to the success of your blog?

I think it’s extremely important to the success of my blog.  They keep me and this blog going!  Getting comments and feedback on what I do on here lets me know what I should (or should not) keep doing and reminds me that I don’t live in a bubble!  I’ve learned a lot from my readers and been inspired by them as well (such as last FBFF post gave me an awesome idea for really good blog post!).  It keeps the sense of community going and that’s what blogging is all about.

What do you do to draw readers in and create that writer-reader bond?

One major thing I do is respond to every comment I receive.  That not only lets my readers know that I read my comments but also that I appreciate them enough to write back.  Another major thing I did is I try on each post to ask for feedback at the end.  I want to know if my readers liked a particular designer I showcased or their thoughts on a product I reviewed.  It’s all about having that dialogue.

What is one way you could improve this connection?

Oh, wow this is a tough question, not because I think I’ve got this down to a science but rather I’m still learning new ways to navigate this blogging world!  One way I can think of improving this connection is getting back to posts I used to do when I didn’t have any comments which were what I called, “Let’s Dish posts”.  They posed those questions that ask for my readers to tell me about themselves, whether it be their favorite product in their makeup bag or their favorite piece of clothing.  That’s something that can make a comeback in the New Year.
Is there a blogger you think does a great job creating that writer-reader bond? Why?

Some of the bloggers (because I can’t name just one) that have such an awesome connection with their readers are Vahni from Grit and Glamour, Suze from Miss Vinyl Ahoy, Vonnie from Socialite Dreams, and Veshoevius from Taxonomy of My Wardrobe.  I feel that whenever I go on their blog and comment it’s like we are just a couple of girlfriends talking to one another! They respond back to comments whether on their blog or on mine and I think that’s really cool.  As a reader I do feel appreciated!

What do you do to cultivate new readers? How do you get them to your site in the first place?

I think the best way of getting new readers is going to where they go – whether it’s their own blog or blogs they read. I try to stay engaged by responding back to comments and leaving comments on their blogs.  I always make sure I have something of value to say so that they may be so inclined to visit my blog.  If a new reader reaches out to me for advice or just to tell me that they like my blog, I respond back to them as quickly as I can, letting them know how much I appreciate them.  I try to think about what I would like a blogger to do for me if I’m a new reader and return that favor.

Your turn!  What are your thoughts?  Would love to hear what you have to say!

Great post. I agree that it makes the reader feel connected when you reply to every comment. And I also take that approach to respond to a new reader to let them know that I appreciate them taking the time to read my blog.

  2. Thanks for visiting my blog! Loved the post, really interesting. I think it’s very important to maintain a sincere writer-reader relationship, especially in the area of blogging – otherwise, what’s the point?
    Great post!

    • You are so welcome! And thank you for stopping by!

Reader interaction is soo important and you’re right – if you don’t have that, what is the point?

  3. Wonderful post, MJ!

I love “let’s dish” type posts – I’d love to see that back on your blog in the NY. Getting to know one another that way is so much fun, and gives us such a unique look at our blogger friends!

AS others have said, I’d never guess you have been in a blogging funk based on the great content you continue to put out! You are a real gem!

    • Well thank you! I really do appreciate it! 🙂

I’m getting a lot of great feedback on the Let’s Dish posts so I’m excited about doing that for the new year! (among other exciting things!)

  4. Could have fooled me that you’re in a funk blogging girlfriend – well that’s you being the polished professional not letting it show I guess! Thanks for the shout out – awww!! Really touched! And I agree with you about the commenting – although I’d happily blog away to myself I find the girly chit chat that happens after with other bloggers in the commenting either on their blogs or mine is so much fun!
Looking forward to your Let’s Dish posts!

    • V trust me I am! It was a struggle this week to write up my posts for this week! LOL

You and you’re blog are awesome so you will always get a shoutout! 🙂

    • You are soo welcome! I have learned soo much from you it’s crazy! So I am grateful for that and the community we have! My blogging life has not been the same since! 🙂

  8. i like the idea of the “let’s dish” type posts to cultivate responses and interaction! I think that I may start a question/answer fun feature just to see what people think on a subject. i participate when OTHER bloggers do it but never incorporated it on my own blog. Good answers MJ, have a good day

    • Thanks girl! Like I said I used to do them a long time ago, but I didn’t have the traffic then so I never got any responses! LOL. I think it would be a real fun thing to do and book bloggers do it a lot, like a weekly thing! So that’s on the list of blogging resolutions for 2011!
