FBFF: Where do the Worn Clothes Go?

Is it me or did this week seriously fly by??  I feel like I just recuperated from a fun filled Father’s Day weekend and it’s already time for the weekend.  I’m not complaining though because I have two days where I can play catch up on both my work and relaxation!

Today’s Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday topic is all about what we do with our clothes when their wearing heyday is over. I hate wasting anything, especially clothes so I try to give away, donate, and re-purpose as much as I can!

How often do you go through your closet to purge the things you no longer wear?

As much as I would like to have some type of schedule when it comes to cleaning out my closet, that never happens! Instead, I find myself cleaning it out when a life event calls for it – gaining/losing weight, moving, and now most recently having a baby.  That’s usually when I spend a day and really go through my things and decide what I want to keep or not.

What do you do with the things you are through with?

I have a two step system when it comes to those clothes I don’t want.  My little sister and my mom get first dibs on those things that I don’t want.  I put everything in shopping bags and when they come over they get to pick through and take what they want.  What’s left over gets donated to my local Goodwill or Salvation Army.  I never throw away anything.

Have you ever sold on consignment or through online boutiques? What has your experience been like?

I’ve only sold one thing and it wasn’t even a dress of mine.  It was a bridesmaid dress that one my girls couldn’t fit in and that I couldn’t return.  I sold it on Ebay and luckily got full price on it.  It was a super easy process, though I wasn’t crazy about having to go down to the post office and send it off.

More and more people are concerned about the fast rotation of fashion and how that is filling our landfills. What are you doing to decrease your clothing trash pile?

One of the many things that blogging has taught me is how to be creative with the clothes you already have and go after versatile pieces.  That’s what I go for when I shop for clothes – can it be worn at least two different ways and does it go with something I already have in my closet?  I try to keep an inventory on those things I already have and when I go shopping I stay focused on what I walked into the store for.

What’s been your favorite/best score from a thrift store or consignment shop?

Wow, there are so many!  I would have to say my favorite  piece from a thrift store I’ve bought was this blazer I bought at Goodwill last year in Tampa.  I absolutely loved the material and the tailoring.  It definitely made me a believer in thrift store shopping for real!

What about you?  What do you with your clothes once they’ve past their prime?

  1. Hey — you have such great items in your closet. You should also consider hosting a swap party.

I would love to do that! Just need to get some curvy girls in the circle.

  2. It’s not just you — June has been a blur! I feel like it’s flown by so fast and was so full of goodness! I have lots to catch up on at my blog. 🙂 Anyway, I would suggest trying to sell at a consignment shop like Buffalo Exchange, Crossroads Trading Company, Plato’s Closet, etc. It’s easy, fast, and fun. I sold one thing on eBay and it was kindof a pain. You don’t get as much money for consignment but it’s a lot easier. So I guess it just depends on what’s more important to you. The way I see it, I’m already getting back less than I spent, even on eBay. I might as well go down the street instead of trying to sell it online!

I will definitely have to try those places out. I know I have a Plato’s closet nearby. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be getting rid of a lot clothes at the end of this year.
