It’s been hot and icky for the past two months and I’m sure a lot of you are starting to get over the summer season. Cooler, humidity free weather will be here before you know it and what better way to get amped up for it than finding out what’s going to be hot in Fall fashion. Bluefly is already on the ball, pulling the curtain back and allowing us to get an early start shopping their fall fashion goodies! I was able to catch up with Sandy Sahn, Bluefly’s dress buyer, to get the scoop on the season’s dress-related trends! With seven years of department store experience and 2 years managing her online boutique, who better to ask about what dresses will be in this fall and how to look totally fab in them!
MJ: Many of us are already looking for some great dresses for Fall. What are some of the hottest dress trends? Which of these trends are curvy girl friendly? What types of dresses should my petite ladies shop for?
SS: My favorite fall dress trend is Draping—think Grecian-inspired flowing fabrics in distinctive colors—and here’s why: it literally flatters ALL body types. Curvy girls can look for knee-length silhouettes in jersey based fabrics while ma petite soeurs can hike up the hemline and look for more closely ruched techniques.
MJ: I know many ladies (myself included!) have a really hard time dress shopping and can be very leery of buying one online without the opportunity to try it on. What should we look for when shopping for a dress online?
SS: Simple: know your measurements. Measure your bust, waist, and hips (if you’re unsure of how to measure yourself, any local tailor would be happy to help). On Bluefly, we include the exact measurements for a size 4, that way it’s easy to size up or down from there.
MJ: A dress isn’t complete without the right accessories! What are your picks for the season?
SS: So true! I’m loving sky-high platform heels this season (a la YSL and Louboutin). And I’m loving this season’s shoulder bags. (I might actually finally splurge on the Chanel quilted classic.)
MJ: How do you go about transitioning a dress from day to evening?
SS: For desk-to-dinner, it really is all about the accessories here. Swap out your tote for a clutch, add a great statement necklace and you’re good to go!
MJ: We know that one color dress may look good with one type of complexion but not the other. What colors compliment pale, olive, and dark skin tones?
SS: Pale skinned women should choose pastels and soft neutrals. Olive complexions always look great in black, greens, and strong colors like bright blues and purples. And there’s nothing I love more than dark skin tones in sharp, stark color—think brights and whites.
MJ: What are your must have dresses for the season?
SS: I’m loving an elegantly draped dress. I’m also pining for a leather sheath, and still can’t get enough of all the great sequin minis out there!
MJ: What’s your favorite dress from the Bluefly Fall collection?
SS: Almost everything from the Wyatt collection—I can’t pick just one! It’s an incredible label with a downtown attitude, and almost every dress is a must-have. I LOVE these draped showstoppers and some of the other wear-to-work staples are amazing. And BONUS: they won’t burn a hole in your wallet!
A big thank you to Sandy for sharing her Fall Trendy Dress Knowledge with us!
So what are you ladies thinking? Are you ready for Fall fashion? Or is it too soon for you to think about?
