Beauty Blast: Ouidad’s Botanical Boost Spray

Ouidad

One type of hair product that I’m still searching high and low for is a moisturizing mist.  The weather is getting so much nicer (and hotter!) and being outside a lot more can leave my hair super fried!  I need something that can refresh my curls, leaving them just as soft and moisturized as when I left the house.  When the folks over at Ouidad gave me the opportunity to review their Botanical Boost Spray, I was all over it!  Now, I must confess, I wasn’t the biggest fan of their products.  I tried some of them in the past and wasn’t too thrilled.  This time around though, my hair is different from the transitioning days so it was worth a shot!

A little about the product – it’s a moisture infusing and refreshing spray with ingredients like Aloe Vera and other botanical extracts.  It promises to preserve moisture, eliminate frizz, and make detangling a breeze.  You can use it right after a shampoo or in the morning to refresh your curls before heading out.  The spray itself is lightweight with no oils or waxes that can weigh hair down.

After a month of using the Botanical Spray first thing in the morning or midday, I thought it was okay.  The spray nozzle, which is one of the first things I check out with a hair spray, helps distribute the product easily.  The 8.5 oz bottle is perfect to put into a travel or beach bag when you need to take it on the go.  The spray itself is light, absorbing into my hair quickly and not leaving it greasy.  My curls did feel soft and brought them back to life.  However, it didn’t last too long though, only a few hours and I needed to retouch my hair again.  In the morning I couldn’t completely ditch my regular moisturizer either.  As for the detangling aspect, my hair is way too thick for this mist to handle in that department so I didn’t even try!

All in all, I think the spray is perfect to touch up hair on the go or right after a long day on the beach if you’re not going straight home.  If your hair isn’t as kinky and coily as mine, I have a feeling it would stay moisturized a lot longer (the site recommends this for wavy and curly hair).  So with that said, I see packing this in my beach bag for a day on the sand and not part of my everyday hair stash.

Have you tried any products from Ouidad?  Are there any I should try?

Beauty Blast: Organix Moroccan Argan Oil & Nourishing Coconut Milk Shampoo

I’ve been having a little shampoo dilemma.  I bought this one trying to save money and thought it would be good because I’m a big fan of the conditioner.  Unfortunately that wasn’t the case and I’ve been trying to find a replacement that works well and doesn’t put too much of a dent in my pocket.  So when the people at Organix reached out to me to review their Moroccan Argan Oil and Coconut Milk Shampoo I was more than happy too.  It’s funny because I’ve passed by their products a gazillion times in the supermarket and drug store but never thought to try them out.  After giving their travel sized (and TSA approved) bottles a quick test run, here’s what I thought!

Coconut Milk Shampoo

Nourishing Coconut Milk Shampoo

Along with organic coconut milk, the shampoo is formulated with egg white proteins to add strength and elasticity to hair.  The shampoo smells fantastic, rich and thick just like I like it.  A little goes a very long way!  I was able to shampoo my all of my hair (I can get heavy handed with shampoo!) and still had enough left over for another wash.  As for getting my hair clean, it does a great job and leaves my curls very soft and moisturized. Extra bonus:  It’s sulfate free!

Moroccan Argan oil

Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo

The argan oil moisturizing formula aims to restore and strengthen hair while increasing his elasticity. It also promises to help fight frizz.  Like the other shampoo it’s rich with a thick consistency that lets a little do a lot.  It doesn’t smell as good as the coconut one but get’s my hair just as clean.  I found my curls were a tad softer with the coconut shampoo but the moisture is there and it’s also sulfate free.

With this initial review I was very pleased with the shampoos and how it worked on my naturally curly hair.  The travel sizes themselves were economical and convenient, happy that I wouldn’t have to buy a couple just for one wash.  The regular size bottles are slightly cheaper than the one I normally use ($8.49 at Walgreens) but I have a good feeling they would last a lot longer, especially with this hair.  I see myself picking up one (most likely the Coconut Milk) real soon!

Have you tried any of their products?  What did you think?

Fierce Natural Hair: How to Do a Wash And Go

Natural Hair

A five day old Wash and Go

You would think this hairstyle would be pretty simple but if your natural hair is getting longer it no longer is a 5 minute thing. Though many girls give up the Wash and Go when they start getting length, it still remains one of my favorite hairstyles and the one I wear the most often.  I’ve learned that my hair thrives when I leave it alone and let it do its thing!

My hair has a mixture of textures going on.  The back of my hair has really tight, cotton like curls.  They need the most moisturizing and take the longest to detangle.  The sides of my hair have slightly looser curls and tend to frizz the most.  The top and front of my hair have the loosest curls and can lose their pattern very easily if stretched too far.  Overall my hair is fine and has crazy shrinkage (it goes past my shoulders when blown out)

All right, onto the routine!

The Wash Part

  • Before stepping into the shower I divide my hair into four sections. Because my hair is longer and thicker, it makes it easy to wash.  I use ponytail holders to hold each section.  Twists unravel in the shower and braiding it dry gives me too much breakage.
  • I shampoo every other week with a co-wash in-between.  Currently I’m using Aussie Moist Shampoo.  For conditioner I use Aussie’s 3 Minute Miracle with a little honey mixed in.  For co-washes I use Hello Hydration from Herbal Essence.
  • I detangle each section while it’s loaded up with conditioner and rinse well.
  • I use old T-shirts to blot dry to cut down on frizz

Wash and Go

The Go Part

  • I keep my hair in sections, applying each product in all sections before moving on to the next one.
  • The first one I use is Cantu Shea Butter Leave in Repair Cream.  I’ve been using this product since I decided to go natural.
  • Next is my styling cream.  My favorites are Shea Moisture’s Curling Cream and Cantu Shea Butter’s Deep Treatment Masque.
  • To seal in all that moisture I put into my hair, I use good old fashion Olive Oil. Anything heavier than this will weigh my hair down and make it way too greasy.  While my curls are nice and slick, I comb through each section.
  • Now my hair needs some shine and hold while it air dries.  The only product I use is Shea Moisture’s Curling Souflee.  I seriously cannot live without this stuff!
  • Give my hair a good shake and now I can go!

On wash days my hair has crazy shrinkage so in the evening I tie my hair up in mini ponytails and sleep with a satin bonnet.  In the morning all I need to do is put a little styling cream in and fluff it out.  Instant big hair! Using this routine, my Wash and Go can last up to a week.

Beauty Storage Ideas

If you’re a beauty junkie like me you know that there comes a point where your stash becomes an unsightly mess!  When your beauty product collection is crazy you can’t fully appreciate all the wonderful stuff you have.  I know I came across some old gems of mine lately and it was only because I got tired of using the same old products and had the time to go through the many plastic drawers and makeup bags I had in my bathroom.  I attempted to organize my stuff awhile back but I still can’t see all that I have at a glance.  While my makeup only requires me to rifle around in my drawers for a few minutes, my hair stuff is another story!  I can’t see everything I have under my sink and those products I do use just create unnecessary clutter on my bathroom counter (and clutter drives me in-sane!)  So I’m on a mission to find a creative, and practical way to store my beauty collection and you won’t believe some of the cool ideas I found!

Another option for the bathroom counter.  It’s like having your own personal beauty display.

Easy solution for the inside of your medicine cabinet.  I even like the toothbrushes there too.

Beauty Look of the Day: Brown Sparkle

Makeup

Though I love experimenting with every color eye shadow under the sun, I do have my days where I just want a nice daytime look.  My Natural Eye Palette gets plenty of love from me so I wanted to use some of my other neutral shadows. I was heading out to a baby shower and my outfit was cute and casual, so I wanted my beauty look to be the same way.   I dug around my stash and found this sparkly brown shadow from Milani so I was excited to use it!  There’s always room for sparkle, even in the daytime!

Face:

The baby shower was outside so I didn’t want anything too heavy but would control the shine.  So I went with Avon’s Cream to Powder Foundation in Cocoa, finishing with my favorite press powder from Covergirl.

Eyes:
  1. As I mentioned before, I used Milani’s Runway Eyes in Bronze Doll as a highlight color on the lids.  It has great color and a subtle sparkle that I love.  Even you want even more depth of color, you can apply it with a wet brush.
  2. To help this gorgeous bronze color stand out, I swept Sue Devitt’s shadow in Burma, a matte chocolate shade in the creases and brow bone.
  3. I thought a black liner would be too much, so I went for Avon’s Everlasting liquid liner in dark brown.  The thin line along the upper lash line opened my eyes up even more.
  4. I finished up with Maybelline’s Colossal Volume Mascara in black.
Lips:

I wanted a natural looking gloss with a touch of shimmer, so I used Avon’s Everlasting Lip Gloss in Apple Cinnamon.

Natural Hair Updo

My little girl totally dictated this hair style.  She is at the stage where she wants to reach up and grab everything, including my hair so it gets put up a lot more often.  I didn’t want to do my standard puff, so I gave myself a little mini bump in the front.  I spritzed my hair with water and used Shea Moisture’s Curling Souffle for hold and shine. And oh, can I just say that the dreaded postpartum hair shedding has stopped! Halleluiah!   I would have a Chia pet after every hair wash. So gross!  My thinning edges are starting to grow in, thanks to applying a little caster oil after washing my hair.  Works wonders I tell you!
